Eczema & Psoriasis

fayetteville dermatologistEczema is a generic term for skin irritation leading to a rash. Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common forms of eczema and is a chronic, relapsing irritation of the skin, often associated with dryness and intense itching. There is often a history of asthma, allergies or sensitive skin in the affected person and/or their family. The disease usually begins in childhood and slowly improves in adolescence or early adulthood. Since atopic dermatitis is often associated with allergies, avoiding pollens, molds dust mites and animal dander can be beneficial, but at times difficult. Not wearing wool or other scratchy fabrics can prevent worsening. Avoidance of harsh soaps and detergents is useful. We generally recommend Dove unscented or Cetaphil soap. Washing clothing and bedding with unscented laundry detergents such as Tide free, Cheer free, or All Free may also be helpful. Since skin dryness is a contributing factor, we recommend short luke-warm baths and showers and frequent lubrication of the skin. We recommend unscented creams such as Cetaphil and Eucerin after baths and as often as needed to prevent dryness. In 10% of patients or less foods may trigger atopic dermatitis, especially in children. Rarely does the elimination of triggering foods lead to cure.

northwest arkansas dermatologyPsoriasis is a rash of the skin affecting 2% of Americans. On the skin psoriasis produces red thickened areas with thick silvery scales. It occurs most commonly on the scalp, elbows, and knees. At times it only affects the hands and/or feet. Its' cause is unknown. However, recent studies suggest an abnormality in a type of white blood cell in the skin that causes the skin to grow too rapidly in certain areas. Cuts, scratches and sunburns can cause new plaques of psoriasis to appear. Psoriasis can also be activated by infections like strep throat and certain drugs. Psoriasis is more likely to occur in people with a family history of it. The mainstay of treatment is topical steroids and other creams that help the skin mature normally. In widespread or serious cases light therapy, or pills by mouth may be prescribed. New treatments which may be used in severe psoriasis are given in shot form. We at Northwest Dermatology Clinic will help you determine which therapy best meets your needs.
